Grand Illusion prep:

Started collecting my fabrics this past weekend for Bonnie Hunters 2014 mystery quilt.  I happen to work at Joann Fabrics, yes some weeks I think I pay them to let me work there.  This past weekend we had a awesome sale going on.  Fat quarters .99 each plus my discount and 50% off the quilting fabrics by the yard.  So I made a dent in what I need for Bonnie Hunters mystery quilt.  I got my blacks and nautrals bought I think I now have enough of both.   What do you all think?  I decided for my nautral to stick to whites.  Does it look like I have enough verity?

I also got my pinks and my yellow.  When I held the yellow up to the card it matched the paint sample perfectly but now in this picture it don't looks so yellow.   Hope it's bright enough.  Like Bonnie planned in her quilt I decided to only use one yellow.

I spent some time this afternoon ironing and folding it and adding it all to my container for this quilt.

I only need to get my teals and greens and I'll be all ready for the Grand Illusion.  Bonnie will be giving us our first step the day after Thanks Giving.  I'm so looking forward to getting started on it.

It was so funny this weekend while I was at work I had my paint chips stuck in my back pocket when a cutstomer noticed them.  She asked me if I was doing Bonnies mystery quilt.  I got so excited to talk to another Bonnie fan.

Ok need to cut this short I want to work a lil bit on my five yard quilt.

Tea Party/chill-laxin day at mamaws

My Princess.... aka my mini me came over yesterday since she is out of school this week.  I wasn't feeling the best had a horrible sinus head ach but so wanted some time with my lil princess, Alexandra.  Alex is such a treat to have around.  I just love that she is a lot like me wanting to be play in my craft room when she is here.  Alex sewed a lil and she drew a lil and then I got down one of my American girl dolls and another one that is a knock off and started it all.  Yes I'm 51 years old and yes I have American girl dolls I love to display in cloths that I make or buy in my craft room.  Today Lexy got to Play with Molly, and the knock off that she named alex.  LOL!!!

She had a lil Tea Party in my Craft room floor, after dressing them up for the party that is.  I love having a lil girl around that loves to play this way.

I also worked on my five yard quilt which I ended up taking apart and resewing.  Grrrrrr hate it when that happens.

this is what I did, not one but 6 of them before I caught it

All wrong:

This is the way the block should have looked liked

I also had a project I'm working on where i used this....

Tune back in to find out what it becomes

Well its almost time to go to work and play with the fabric there for a while.

As always

Favorite Scissors

I love my Ginger Scissors.  It was what I grew up on.  My mom had a pair and I can't remember her never having these scissors.  I am blessed to own her old ones and yes they still work.  You know if you come in my house and use my sewing scissors for anything but fabric I may use them on you.  LOL  Just kidding.  Now momma wasn't this way at all she used these for everything and I do mean everything.  I can remember her using them on paper, sewing, and even in the kitchen to open boxes and bags and anything else they could be used for.  Here is my mom's scissors they look worn but they still cut, they do need sharpened but I'm too scared to trust them in the hands of anyone.  They are priceless to me.

This is a picture of my mom I sure wish she was here to use these.  Even to open up her bills with.  She kept them on a table beside her favorite chair always handy.  I like to thank she'd likes to know that I still use them on my desk but I only use them on paper and to cut thread at times.

another pair that has been around our house for a long time but I don't think they are Gingher but look vintage to me are these little embroidery scissors or as my dad call them snips.  They have a "Gold Seal" name on them and say they were from St. Pete's Fl.  Anyone know anything about these?  These were at one time my Aunt Juanita's they have her name on them.  I think she gave them or my mom at some point.  Again these were always on my mom's table.

Both of these are treasures to me.

I have a few pairs of Ginger Scissor's that I've bought over the past few years and they are for SEWING ONLY!!!  This 8in-knife-edge-dressmakers-shears was my first pair I bought they are wonderful I've had them about 2 years now and they are just as sharp as the day I took them out of the box.  They have never been sharpened.

I like to use the below pair for when I need to remove stablizer from machine embroiderd or aplique projects anything I need to get a close cut on.

the below pair are lightweight-embroidery-scissors which are what I carry in my purse to use with my paper piecing project.  Read about that in the post before this one.

These are some "Snips" as I call them and there is a pair I keep beside my sewing machines to clip off little corners, or threads.  LOVE THESE

I have a few Fiskars scissors as well and they are good too but I love my Ginghers the best and I love that they have history.  I hope to collect a few more vintage scissors in time to use and display in my studio.  I use my Fiskars mostly for my paper crafting projects.

Well the day is going to come to an end soon and I don't want it to end without getting in some more sewing so off here I need to go.  Hope you enjoyed my adventures in scissors page.  I am silly I know to get excited over something as like scissors but when you sew you know how important a good favorite pair are to you.

Gettin my Hexie on

Just a quickie update this morning on where I'm at on what may become a life long project.  But I'm ok with that I will keep on keepin on till this gets done.  I love busy hand work.  I have this project in my purse all the time and I work on it every few minutes I can grab including my lunch break.  I just can't ever just sit my hands have got to be busy.  Here is what my travel kit looks like...

I use a small case that you use for storing 4 by 6 photos in, (from Joann Fabrics) it works out perfect for keep it all contained and keep my pieces from getting wrinkles in them.

Inside I keep my lil' Gingher scissors, thimble for when my finger gets sore, cut fabric pieces, thread, and extra needles and my template.

Also in my purse you will find my new favorite thing the mini olfa cutting mat and rotary cutter.  Yes you heard me right in my purse.  Also a small baggy of fabrics ready to but cut and extra hexie paper pieces.

I order my templetes from Paper Pieces  The paper piecing project I am working on right now is using the 1/2" hexies.  Yes it's tiny, yes I'm insane, and yes I LOVE IT!!!

So I'm sure you are ready to see what I've got done so far.  I've been working on this for a couple of months now and like I said its just a few minutes here and there so I'm not very far along.   You will notice that some of them have baste stitches and some don't.  Since beginning this project I've learned how to baste them so that I don't have to go through the paper or rip out the baste stitches anymore.

I am asking all of you that quilt and don't use those tiny lil' pieces of fabrics you have left over from projects to save them for me for my paper piecing scrappy projects.  Right now as you can see I need whites, yellows and greens.  But I've never met a fabric I'd turn down.  So there you go a life long project.  I'll post updates on this project from time to time so stay tuned.  I may also have a contest on naming this quilt with a lil prize involved.

"Landslide" w/lyrics!! ~Fleetwood Mac

This is one of my favorite songs.  For some reason when I hear this song it makes me think of where I am at in life.  I love my age even with all the aches and pains I am starting to feel with growing older.  But I love who I am and I love trying to grow into who I wanna be.

Some of the things I love most about my life is the men in my life, who always encourages me to try new things and to enjoy life.  Kevin is my very best friend, my lover, my life and has taught me what true love means.

Another favorite man in my life is my grandson Zachery.  This lil guy always has a way to make me smile and he has taught me that you can learn to cope with things in your life that may be hard but you can do it.

Here is the some photos that was taken recently at Zachery's school there are not too many pictures of me that I like but these I do cause I'm with the men I love most and I feel so loved when I'm with them.  Thanks to my daughter for buying these for us and for giving me this wonderful grandson.

I love you both too the moon and back!!

Bonnie's New Mystery Quilt!

I'm very excited that about time for Bonnie's 2014 mystery quilt! We now have a name and its the "Grand Illusion."

Last year I wanted to be a part of the mystery quilt so bad but I was very nervous and a lil scared on weather I could keep up or do very good at it.  Bonnie's quilts are very detailed and totally awsome and very scrappy (which I LOVE LOVE LOVE) I was a afraid it would be way over my head.  I think I've stated before that if I'd had looked at the quilt as a finished quilt I wouldn't have taken it on, I would have thought it too challenging for me as I'm not a newbie to quilting but was a very simple quilter, scared to think I could do anything beyond a nine patch.  I was self taught and totally taught myself wrong... LOL!!  Back to Bonnie's quilts... so I took it on and though I didn't finish it in time with some of the more seasoned quilters I did finish it and was very happy I did.  It turned out very nice and I learned a lot alone the way.  Bonnie explains each step and shows you how to do them and I have to say it was easy thanks to her wonderful teaching skills.  Again I have to show off last years quilts.  It is my favorite quilt to date that I've ever made 2013 mystery quilt...

Back to 2014 mystery quilt Bonnie has reveal to us the name "Grand Illusion" and has given us this years color and fabric requirements.  I've gone to Lowes and picked up my paint samples in the colors she has given us.  We will also be using blacks and neutrals.

I work in retail and have to work on Black Friday's (which I don't mind I think working black fridays are fun and saves Kevin money from me not shopping them LOL) which is the day Bonnie reveals the first step so I will be looking forward to that as soon as I get home.

I would love it if some of you joined me this year in Bonnie's mystery quilt I think it would be fun to have someone I know doing this with me.  Here is the link if your interested... Bonnie's Mystery Quilt

I only have a hour left till I have to get ready for work so I think I'll work on getting my room cleaned up a bit,  Its still a mess from getting ready for the quilt show.  I am hoping for a sew day on Wednesday.

Hope you have a crafty day!

Quilt show

The quilt show was great!   A lot of work but fun!  I so enjoyed working with everyone and getting to touch some amazing quilts.  Too many to pick a favorite for sure.

On Wednesday we all pitched in and in no time we had the place set up. The woman who have done this for many years sure have it all down to a science.   Very organized and smooth going.  A few husbands where even there to pitch in.

Wednesday late afternoon and thursday morning quilters and some non quilter who just love to display thier family quilts started to drop off and register their quilts to be displayed.   I was enjoying helping to register them. It was awsome to get to touch these beautiful works of art.  All different types of styles. Some trditional some modern but all very beautiful and some very loved each with history and each telling a story.

The quilt below belongs to a Linda Mcglothin. Her quilt tell story about hobos. Her quilt was a round robin quilt, which is where a small group of woman take turns adding a border on and the owner dosnt see the quilt till everone has had a chance to add on a border after the owner first creates the center block.

This was my first show to ever take a part in or display a quilt in. I cant explain how good it made me feel to walk though these wonderful examples of many different styles of beautiful quilts and see mine hanging.  To see people taking the time to stop and look at mine and even take a picture.  I didnt win anything but this alone was my reward.

Got er done!

A few weeks ago at the monthly work shop for our quilt guild we made grommit purses.  I needed to put one last grommit in mine to have it done when I realized it was 2 negative pieces and no positive.  So that put me on hold with finishing my bag.  I took the grommit to work and we were out of them.  So I waited and last week we got more in.

I also made a lil matching bag to go with it

33 Annual Harvest of Quilts

I've always scene online where people post quilts they've hung in quilt shows and I always thought how cool to be able to do that or even be apart of a quilt guild.  Well this past year I met a woman (Donna Apple) at after work while I was shopping for the fabric I would be needing for Bonnie's mystery quilt.  While we were talking quilts and our love of quilts Donna explained to me what had brought her in and that she had just left a work shop for a guild she belonged to.  I got excited and told her that I've always wanted to join such a group but hadn't found any in our area.  This group is the Towne Square Quilt Club and she told a little more about the group.  Donna and I exchanged facebook names and she introduced me to Linda who is also a fabulous quilter.   I found out more about the club and attended a meeting.  I've have found a group of wonderful new friends and have learned a lot from them.

This Friday and Saturday our guild is putting on a quilt show.  There will be beautiful quilts to admire and vendors to shop and our group will be having a store of items for sale as well.  There will also be a auction on Sat of a quilt and other handmade items.

The quilt show is at the Darke County Fairgrounds 800 Sweitzer St.  (st. Rt. 49), Greenville, OH 45331   It is Friday Oct. 10th.- 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday Oct. 11, 2014 - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.    Hope to see you there!!

I will be displaying 3 of the quilts I've made this year.  I'm very excited about this they are not the best cause I'm learning but I'm excited that I will have them displayed and hope they inspire someone else who wants to begin quilting.   Of course just as I was finishing binding my last one today I found a boo boo.  Opps!

Hope to see you there!

Happy Crafting!

It was not the easy way out!

When I tell people I had bariatric surgery they will say that I took the easy way out.  But I'm here to tell you it was not a easy way out.

A little over two years ago my sugar was extremely high I was on a insulin pump, metformin, and two shots a day to try and control my sugar.  I ate right most of the time, watching my sugar intake my carb intake.  Yet my levels ran high.  My old doctor would increase my insilin which would increase my weight which would increase my need for more insilin.  I was also on cholesterol meds and high blood pressure.  I felt like crude all the time and fought to hide it from others.  I decided to try a new doctor and on my second visit after going to though blood work and tests she explained that at the levels my diabetis was I was well on my way to needing dialysis, that I already had neuropathy in my feet.  I also had to have cataracts  removed at a early age and had neuropathy in my eyes.  So the damage diabetis could cause had begun.  I also was diagnose with Fibromyalgia.

My doctor asked me if I'd ever consider having bariatric surgery.  That it had been known to either reverse diabetis or at least get it to a more control-able level.  I said I had thought about it but didn't know that it could do that.  So she got the process rolling and on July 31st 2012 I had surgery.  I had to go though a bunch of tests first and even what they called bariatric boot camp.  Where I learned the do's and don't that go along with having this surgery.  I was very thankful for the support of my family and my coworkers while I was going though all this.

When I had my surgery my husband stayed with me in the hosp till I could go home.  They watched my sugar levels closely while I was in the hospital and I was able to go home without any insulin. They did warn me there was a chance I'd have to be on something but we'd see where it went.

I followed everything they taught me and once i was recovered I started exercising and discovered after some of the weight started coming off that I had more energy.  After two months I was off all medications completely.  I was already starting to feel better.  After one year I'd reached what was set for me as a goal for a healthy bmi of 25 and I'd lost a total of 150 pounds.  I went to the doctor today and she said since my a1c was still normal that she was going to now take it off my records that I am a diabetic.

My hair is a little longer now.  But i look the same.  But you know what many don't understand it wasn't about looks for me.  It was about feeling better, being healthier so I can spend more time doing the things I love like spending time with my husband, my family and friends and not feel like crap, not able to keep up with them.  I can now walk all day at the zoo with my grand-kids and I can ride 30 miles on my bike with my husband.  I can work all day and not have to have my husband help me out of my car cause I am hurting too bad to move.  I love the life this surgery has given me.

Was it the easy way out HELL NO!  I measure my food, I count my calorie intake I make healthy choices, I work out even when I don't want to.  I do everything someone on a diet does.  The surgery was just another one of those tools that help you reach your goal.  Would have loved to not had to have it to get there but without it no matter how hard I'd try it just didn't work.

I'm a little over two years out and I still measure my food, count my calories.  I have to cause I never want to go back to where I was before.  Some ask me if I miss food, NOPE, I don't feel deprived at all.  Id rather be playing on the playground with my grandkids.  And if I really want it I take a bite!

I do fight with my body image some, I still see me as the woman on the left in the above pictures.  I still look at a booth in a restaurant and wonder if I'm going to fit in it.  When someone calls me skinny in certain ways it can feel good but it can also hurt just as bad when someone called me fat cause they are judging me by my size not for who I am.  But it also depends on the text of how they say it.

I'm still me, still the person on the left just that now I'm healthy!  To me its not about peoples size to me its about how you feel, are you healthy?   When I look at someone I look at them the same way I hope they look at me.  A person!  Not a size!  It does make me feel good when someone says you look good, I like to take it as you look healthy and like you feel better.  Oh and that my make up and hair look good that day!  LOL!

I want to thank this wonderful man who is my biggest supporter.  Kevin encourages me and pushes me when I need it.  Kevin without you I'm sure I wouldn't have done as well as I have.  You help keep me going!  I LOVE U BABY!  Thank you for this wonderful life you share with me!

Ta daaaaa

Today is the first day of my vacation.  I took this week off to be a part of the quilt show that a guild I belong to is putting on.  Today and tomorrow I'm working on finishing up some projects I want to enter in the quilt show. This is a first time for me to display some of my quilts in a quilt show.  Mine aren't the best examples of quilting but im sure having fun
Today so far I've finished binding up my Bonnie Hinters 2013 mystery quilt "Celtic Solstice"  I cant remember if I've mentioned it before but to date this is my most favorite quilt I've made.  I LOVE IT

As you can see Lucy had to take part in helping me get the job done!

I machine embroidered my label and sewed it on.

I've posted a picture of it before but wanted to share it again.
My Celtic Solstice

Looking forward to Bonnie's 2014 mystery quilt which starts the day after Thanksgiving.  Bonnie will be giving us the fabric requirements Oct. 15th.  Can't wait!  After the quilt show I plan on finishing up a few small projects for Christmas gifts so I can clear the deck so I will be ready to work on Bonnie's mystery quilt!

Well time to get back to binding I have just two more sides of a queen size quilt to finish up in time for the show.  I GOT THIS!

Happy Crafting!

I fell in love this weekend

Yeppers head over heel in love!  With this vintage machine I spotted at Metamora, Not just one but I saw TWO!!!!  I hope to one day find one that I can afford!  The price tag on these were 700.00 and then the one in the picture was 599.99  I'm no expert on the cost of vintage machines but this seems extremely high to me!  My sissy took a picture of it and posted it on facebook and I copied it so I can come back to my blog and goo goo gaa gaa over it every now and then.  Just look at this beauty, its a Singer 221 featherweight from the 1950's.  It had all its attachments and case and even a can of machine oil.  I stared at it forever and then had to gently walk away!

I am also developing another new love.  Antique Flow Blue China!  I friend of ours collects it and after seeing theirs and leaning about the history and how to tell ifs it the real deal it has really sparked my interest.  Thanks Bruce for sharing with me your knowledge on this!  Your collection is amazing!  (photo by Dolores Monet)

For those of you that are not familiar with Flow Blue China here is a link where you can go read about it.  HERE  When shopping for Flow Blue you do need to know what to look for and not be fooled by what is known as transferwear.  Which is beautiful as well but once someone (like my friend Bruce) teaches you the difference you can tell it almost right away!

We went to a flea market at I got off work Sunday and guess what I found?  I didn't get it but I'm thinking really hard about it.  It was a beautiful Flow Blue Plate.  The perfect start to start collecting them.  I did get another beautiful dish for just penny's to put on my table it is a iridescent bowl.  I first thought it was a stain but its not, its the iridescent of it.  I got this for .50 cents.  LOVE IT!

Ive been in serch of some tables for my living room and family room and we came accross one this weekend.  I talked them down :) Kevin is a very good teacher.  LOL!

This looks great beside our love seat~  Now to find a lap and some prettys to put on it.

Alright time to get back to my quilt.  Just need to put the lable on it and it will be finished.
